Surrounded by spectacular gardens, the Hôtel des Invalides was built in 1687 under Louis XIV as a military hospital and a retirement home for war veterans. The Esplanade des Invalides runs north to south, with rows of trees along its western and eastern sides. This large open space in the heart of the capital has become a popular leisure destination for locals and tourists to exercise, play music or go for a walk.
