women men mixed PORTE DE LA CHAPELLE ARENA The new arena was designed to be an animated space accessible to all that catered for the needs of local residents, offering them a range of sports activities before and after the Games. Meeting a need identified by Paris City Council before the Games bid, the arena will be able to accommodate 8,000 people for basketball games and 9,000 for concerts, which means its capacity lies between the Pierre de Coubertin stadium (4,000) and Bercy Arena (17,000). The new arena’s chosen design is distinctly eco-friendly: 80% of the building will be covered in greenery to blend in with its surroundings, giving it a fresh look. With a recyclable aluminium facade, the building will be designed using mainly bio-sourced and low-carbon materials, prioritising reuse wherever possible. The multi-purpose venue at Porte de la Chapelle, a working-class area, will mark the beginning of redevelopment work across the capital’s 18 th arrondissement. The Arena, which is expected to be completed by summer 2023, will be home to the “Paris Basket” club. The modular nature of the facilities will be put to good use during the Games, with the venue set to host two different sports one after the other for both Olympic (badminton and rhythmic gymnastics) and Paralympic (para badminton and para powerlifting) events.
