The starting area for the marathon will be only a temporary installation. Paris’ Hôtel de Ville, and the square to which it gives its name, have recently been added to the list of prestigious sites which will play host to some of the Olympic events in the heart of the capital. Others include the Grand Palais, Les Invalides and Place de la Concorde. The marathon will depart from the site, steeped in history, where Paris’ municipal authorities have sat since 1357. The current building, after the neo- Renaissance style, was rebuilt by architects Théodore Ballu and Édouard Deperthes on the site of the former Hôtel de Ville, which was burned by the Paris Commune in 1871. It is particularly noteworthy for its majestic façade, 143m long and 18.8m high (26.8m, at the corner towers, and 50m for the bell tower). Formerly known as Place de Grève, today the Place de l’Hôtel de Ville is a veritable hub for activities, exhibitions and culture. In summer 2024, it will be transformed into a magnificent Olympic competition venue.
