The Pont Alexandre III will play a major part in the ‘Paris centre’ arrangements during the Olympic and Paralympic Games Paris 2024. The bridge, which links two competition venues – Les Invalides and the Grand Palais – will, itself, host the triathlon, the cycling time trial (serving as the finish line) and the marathon swimming. The site, on which temporary infrastructure will be built, played a major role in 2017, when Paris’ bid to host the Games was still ongoing. For Olympic Day on 23 June 2017, a diving board was built on the bridge, and a floating running track was installed along the Seine beside it. Pont Alexandre III is no stranger to large events, given that it was opened to mark the Paris Exposition in 1900. The bridge was designed to symbolise friendship between Russia and France, established by the 1891 signing of the alliance between Emperor Alexander III of Russia and President of the French Republic Sadi Carnot. It was built under the supervision of engineers Jean Résal and Amédée Alby, and the architects Cassien-Bernard and Gaston Cousin. The 45m-wide metal bridge is a single arch, 107m long, including three joints, which allows it to cross the Seine with no additional supports. In and of itself, it is a veritable tourist attraction, which will offer Olympic spectators a breathtaking view of the sporting events, and some of the most beautiful monuments of Paris.
