Saint-Étienne, a city in the Auvergne- Rhône-Alpes region, is the French design capital and the only French city to be included in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network for design. These achievements are a nod not only to the economic and industrial past of a city at its innovative best for over two centuries, but also – and more importantly – to the momentum that is currently building in the Greater Saint-Étienne area, where 400,000 people live. An international event takes place every two years to showcase this momentum, comprising of exhibitions, workshops and colloquia and fostering a creative economy. Saint-Étienne was awarded the City of Art and History label by the French Ministry of Culture and Communication in 2000 and became a member of UNESCO’s International Coalition of Inclusive and Sustainable Cities in 2019. Geoffroy Guichard stadium – named after its founder, a well-known local entrepreneur – is a mythical French sports venue that is home to legendary club AS Saint-Étienne. Built in 1931, the stadium – nicknamed the “Cauldron” – has been renovated several times. The most recent work, delivered in early 2016, brought its capacity up to 42,000 while maintaining the original architectural characteristics of an “English-style” stadium. Access to the stadium was also improved as part of the work, which was rounded off by a new tram connection in 2019. The stadium also houses the Musée des Verts, a museum exploring the history of the AS Saint-Étienne football team. In 2007, it became the first French stadium to install solar panels on its roof.
